At PILI, we have found a solution in the invisible world: biology can efficiently produce colors and other precious molecules without relying on petroleum. Microorganisms are experts in this field because they can cleanly and efficiently transform substances through enzymes. Fermentation enables microorganisms to break down renewable plant-based materials, such as sugar or wood, and reshape them into dyes. This process has a reduced energy balance because the enzymes in these microorganisms work at room temperature, without toxic solvents, and use far less water and energy than petrochemical processes. Therefore, by designing the best color-producing microbial factories through synthetic biology, we can produce sustainable, high-performance dyes.
