Online Service Provider

Basic Information

AOL is an American online service provider headquartered in New York City. It is a brand under Verizon Media. In the mid-1990s, AOL was one of the early pioneers of the Internet and the most recognized brand on the American network. It initially provided dial-up services to millions of Americans and later offered a portal site, email, instant messaging, and eventually a web browser after acquiring Netscape. At the height of its popularity in 2001, it acquired Time Warner, marking the largest media merger in U.S. history. Afterwards, AOL rapidly declined, partly due to the rise of broadband over dial-up services. AOL was eventually spun off from Time Warner in 2009, and Tim Armstrong was appointed as the new CEO. Under his leadership, the company invested in media brands and advertising technology.
