Basic Information

Capital Medical University was founded in 1960 and is a key higher education institution in Beijing. It is a co-built institution by the Beijing Municipal Government, the National Health Commission, and the Ministry of Education. The late renowned urology expert, academician of the two academies, and Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, Professor Wu Jieping, was the first president. The current Party Secretary is Researcher Hu Wenliang, and the president is the famous molecular neurobiologist Professor Rao Yi. The university’s main campus has 11 schools and one research center, including the School of Basic Medical Sciences, School of Pharmacy, School of Public Health, School of Nursing, School of Biomedical Engineering, School of Traditional Chinese Medicine, School of Medical Humanities, School of General Practice and Continuing Education, School of Marxism, International School, Yanjing Medical College, and the Brain Major Diseases Research Center. The university currently has 22 clinical medical colleges (of which 20 are affiliated hospitals), including Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University (First Clinical Medical College), Beijing Friendship Hospital (Second Clinical Medical College), Beijing Chaoyang Hospital (Third Clinical Medical College), Beijing Tongren Hospital (Fourth Clinical Medical College), Beijing Tiantan Hospital (Fifth Clinical Medical College), Beijing Anzhen Hospital (Sixth Clinical Medical College), Beijing Jishuitan Hospital (Seventh Clinical Medical College), Fuxing Hospital (Eighth Clinical Medical College), Beijing You’an Hospital (Ninth Clinical Medical College), Beijing Chest Hospital (Tenth Clinical Medical College), Sanbo Brain Hospital of Capital Medical University (Eleventh Clinical Medical College), Beijing Ditan Hospital (Twelfth Clinical Medical College), Beijing Children's Hospital (Pediatrics Medical College), Beijing Stomatological Hospital (Stomatology Medical College), Beijing Anding Hospital (Mental Health College), Beijing Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital (Obstetrics and Gynecology College), Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Clinical College of Traditional Chinese Medicine), Beijing Shijitan Hospital (Cancer Medical College), Beijing Rehabilitation Hospital (Beijing Rehabilitation Medical College), Beijing Luhe Hospital (Luhe Clinical Medical College), China Rehabilitation Research Center (Rehabilitation Medical College), and China-Japan Friendship Hospital (China-Japan Friendship Clinical Medical College), as well as a preventive medicine teaching base (Beijing Center for Disease Prevention and Control). The university also has 39 specialized clinical colleges and departments, and 40 clinical diagnosis, treatment, and research centers. The university has 8 national key disciplines and 2 national key (cultivated) disciplines; 60 national key clinical specialties (including traditional Chinese medicine); 14 key (cultivated) disciplines of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine; 4 first-level key disciplines of Beijing, 6 second-level key disciplines of Beijing, 1 key interdisciplinary discipline of Beijing, and 1 subject cluster of higher education institutions in the Beijing area. The university’s 12 disciplines—clinical medicine, neuroscience and behavior, pharmacology and toxicology, immunology, biology and biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics, general social sciences, psychiatry and psychology, microbiology, chemistry, materials science, environmental and ecological science—are ranked in the top 1% globally in ESI, with clinical medicine, neuroscience and behavior, pharmacology and toxicology ranked in the top 1‰ in ESI, and immunology, biology and biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics, psychiatry and psychology ranked in the top 5‰ globally.The university has 8 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points and 13 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points; according to second- and third-level disciplines, there are 59 doctoral degree authorization points and 77 master's degree authorization points. It has the authority to confer professional master's and doctoral degrees in all medical and related disciplines. There are 9 postdoctoral research stations. The long-term programs offered by the university include clinical medicine, pediatrics, and stomatology. The undergraduate programs include clinical medicine, basic medicine, stomatology, pediatrics, preventive medicine, mental health, pharmacy, clinical pharmacy, traditional Chinese medicine, Chinese materia medica, nursing, biomedical engineering, prosthetics and orthotics engineering, rehabilitation therapy, physical therapy in rehabilitation, occupational therapy in rehabilitation, audiology and speech-language pathology, public administration (health management), law (health law), medical laboratory technology, medical laboratory science, medical imaging technology, information management and information systems (health information management), optometry and vision science, health inspection and quarantine, midwifery—26 in total. Higher vocational (junior college) education offers clinical medicine and nursing. The university trains academic and applied talents in medicine and related disciplines, forming an all-round, multi-level, innovative talent training model.
