AFYX Therapeutics is a private biopharmaceutical company focused on innovative approaches to treating mucosal diseases. The company has developed the Rivelin patch, a breakthrough therapy for mucosal diseases. Rivelin is designed to deliver drugs unidirectionally to mucosal surfaces using occlusive, bioadhesive, and biodegradable patches that adhere for long periods and are highly flexible, conforming to mucosal surfaces. AFYX's lead Rivelin patch product candidate aims to treat autoimmune and inflammatory diseases like oral lichen planus (OLP) by directly delivering the drug clobetasol propionate. OLP can manifest as lesions in the mouth, potentially causing burning, pain, and other discomforts. OLP is considered an autoimmune disease requiring regular monitoring, as patients have an increased risk of oral cancer in affected areas. There are no FDA-approved treatments, with current off-label therapies ranging from topical corticosteroids to laser ablation. It is estimated that OLP affects 1% to 2% of the population. Following the successful Phase 1b clinical study of non-drug-loaded Rivelin patches in OLP patients, AFYX has initiated a Phase 2b clinical study of clobetasol-loaded Rivelin patches in the United States and various European countries.
