Developer of Cancer and Diabetes Cell Therapies

Basic Information

PharmaCyte Biotech is a biotechnology company developing cell therapies for cancer and diabetes based on its proprietary cellulose-based live-cell encapsulation technology (Cell-in-a-Box®), which serves as a platform for developing treatments for various types of cancer and diabetes.PharmaCyte's cancer product candidates include encapsulated genetically engineered human cells that convert inactive chemotherapy drugs into active or "anti-cancer" forms. For pancreatic cancer, these encapsulated cells are implanted into the blood supply of the patient’s tumor, as close to the tumor site as possible. Once implanted, ifosfamide, a prodrug normally activated in the liver, is administered intravenously at one-third of the standard dose. The circulating system carries ifosfamide to the site where the encapsulated cells are implanted. As ifosfamide flows through the small pores of the capsules, the living cells inside act as an "artificial biological liver," activating the prodrug ifosfamide at the tumor site.
