United States House of Representatives

Basic Information

The full name of the United States House of Representatives is the United States House of Representatives. It is one of the two chambers of the legislative body of the United States—the United States Congress—with the other chamber being the United States Senate. The number of seats each state holds in the House of Representatives is based on population, with each state guaranteed at least one representative. The total number of representatives is legally set at 435. Members of the House serve two-year terms with no term limits. The Speaker of the House is elected by the members and is traditionally the leader of the majority party. However, the Majority Leader is the second-ranking member of the majority party in the House. According to the U.S. Presidential Succession Act, the Speaker of the House is third in line to succeed the President, after the Vice President who also serves as the President of the Senate. The House of Representatives is generally considered to be more partisan than the Senate. Many of the Constitution's framers intended for the Senate (initially elected by state legislatures) to act as a check on the House of Representatives (elected directly by citizens).
