Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center

Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-sen University is the only ophthalmic specialty hospital under the direct administration of the National Health Commission. It ranks first in ophthalmology reputation in China (for 12 consecutive years) and first in ophthalmic scientific influence in China (for 8 consecutive years). It is the only institution supported by the State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology. Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center is the largest public ophthalmic hospital. In 1995, it became the first tertiary ophthalmic hospital in China. Currently, it has a total construction area of 120,000 square meters and an excellent medical environment. With 508 beds, 270 ophthalmologists, and 335 registered ophthalmic nurses, it provides high-quality diagnosis and treatment services for patients with common, difficult, and rare eye diseases. Its service volume ranks among the top public ophthalmic hospitals in China. In 2021, it had more than 1.2 million outpatient visits and over 80,000 surgeries, making it an important base for ophthalmic cadre healthcare in China. For two consecutive years, it ranked second in the national performance assessment of tertiary public hospitals (first in ophthalmology).
