Basic Information
Genomics England is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Department of Health, aimed at delivering the 100,000 Genomes Project. It is composed of the National Institute for Health Research, NHS England, Public Health England, and Health Education England. Genomics England sequences 100,000 whole genomes from NHS patients and their families. Its four main goals include benefiting patients, creating an ethical and transparent program based on consent, supporting new scientific discoveries and medical insights, and initiating the development of the UK genomics industry. Genomics England focuses on patients with rare diseases and their families, as well as patients with common cancers. Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt announced it in 2013 as part of the NHS’s 65th anniversary celebration. Its headquarters is located in London, UK.
