De Novo Enzyme Corporation Develops Different Classes of Chemical Reactions for Active Protein Catalysts and Detailed Biochemical and Structural Characterization Studies. Enzymes provide a cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and highly efficient alternative to chemical catalysts. Over the past two decades, the use of enzymes in industrial settings has significantly increased. While many natural enzymes have been modified through protein engineering to better suit practical applications, these methods are often insufficient. A key goal for enzyme engineers is to construct enzymes from scratch—or, "de novo." To date, several techniques have been developed to achieve this goal: namely, computational design, catalytic antibodies, and mRNA display. These methods rely on different principles, balancing rational protein design with fully combinatorial approaches involving large libraries of proteins for directed evolution.
