The main research focus of Cheung Laboratories, Inc. is functional genomics. A key challenge in interpreting risk variants from genome-wide association studies is that most variants are non-coding. Emerging evidence suggests that non-coding variants may reside in regulatory elements or disrupt transcription factor-DNA binding. Moreover, they may influence the activity of other gene-coding regions through long-range chromatin interactions, resulting in phenotypic differences. Cheung Laboratories, Inc. is investigating the genotype-phenotype basis of several vascular disease-associated variants to elucidate how they function through broader complex networks, impacting genes directly related to disease.
