Basic Information

Multidrug resistance (MDR) in Gram-negative bacteria is genetically highly complex. It involves many different resistance genes, and there are numerous variants within these genes. A single resistance gene or variant may be present across a wide range of Gram-negative bacteria or may be specific to an individual species. Local epidemiology can also vary significantly between different geographic regions. For clinical diagnosis, the following applications may be relevant: screening individuals suspected of carrying MDR Gram-negative bacteria for infection prevention; detecting individuals infected with Gram-negative bacteria with increased resistance to β-lactams; genotype confirmation of Gram-negative bacteria showing high resistance in culture-based susceptibility testing; and genotypic analysis of individual bacteria for epidemiological typing.
