Aukera Therapeutics is developing a novel protein therapy for the treatment of ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease), a rare but devastating neurodegenerative disease that progresses rapidly and is always fatal, typically within 3 to 5 years. There is only one FDA-approved drug for ALS, which extends life by only 2-3 months and has no effect on the symptoms of the disease. Angiopoietin replacement therapy has already shown significant effects on survival and motor function in ALS mouse studies.
