Basic Information
In 2005, San Antonio community and industry leaders established BioMed SA, a healthcare bioscience development company, to build on the city’s impressive biomedical assets and increase its visibility across the nation and beyond. The initiative was based on the recognition that, despite the large size and economic significance of the local healthcare and bioscience industries, San Antonio's unique biomedical assets were not being fully recognized. The City of San Antonio, Bexar County, and CPS Energy provided a total grant of $250,000 to launch BioMed SA as a nonprofit corporation and public-private partnership. This was done at the request of Henry Cisneros and Joe Krier, representing the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce. BioMed SA subsequently obtained tax-exempt status from the IRS as a 501(c)(6) organization. After a nationwide search and selection process, Ann Stevens began serving as president of San Antonio’s bioscience community starting November 1, 2005. She and Donna Miller, Director of Membership and Administrative Services, formed the initial staff.
