Basic Information

Sana Biotechnology Focuses on Using Engineered Cells as Medicine for Patients. The ability to modify genes and use cells as medicine will be one of the most significant advances in healthcare in the coming decades. Sana is building differentiated capabilities in the field of cell and gene therapy.Sana Biotechnology aims to find treatments for patients with poor outcomes or currently incurable conditions, hence Sana Biotechnology has three aspirations:1. The ability to repair and control genes in any cell within the body. Sana Biotechnology is advancing novel delivery technologies with the goal of being able to deliver any payload to any cell in a specific, predictable, and reproducible manner, paving the way for the next generation of in vivo gene therapies.2. The ability to differentiate pluripotent stem cells into immunologically privileged functional cells within the body, with the hope of replacing any missing or damaged cells in the body.3. By focusing on scalable manufacturing solutions, manufacturing costs, and alignment with key stakeholders, Sana Biotechnology can make its therapies more widely accessible.Sana's R&D focuses on three directions: repairing any cell in the human body with gene therapy; replacing any cell in the human body with cell therapy; and developing corresponding technologies to make these therapies possible. In terms of specific therapies, Sana’s technology can be divided into two categories: in vivo therapies and ex vivo therapies. For in vivo therapies, Sana hopes to use its cell-editing platform to treat genetic diseases caused by gene defects. The key lies in performing various precise gene edits (editing genes, editing bases, inserting genes, controlling gene expression, etc.) on cells and delivering these cells to any part of the human body at any dosage. Additionally, Sana plans to develop corresponding large-scale production and clinical trial capabilities. For ex vivo therapies, Sana hopes to differentiate stem cells into various cell types needed clinically to replace damaged cells in the body, thereby transforming the treatment of many diseases. Similarly, they plan to understand cell characteristics, understand the microenvironment necessary for their survival, develop appropriate cell delivery technologies, and overcome issues such as immune rejection and cell death after transplantation into the human body. Perhaps one day, we will be able to restore heart muscle in heart disease patients, regenerate neurons in Parkinson’s patients, and repair liver cells in hepatitis patients.
