Savara Pharmaceuticals is a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on innovative drugs for the treatment of serious and life-threatening rare respiratory diseases. Savara Pharmaceuticals' lead product candidate, AeroVanc™ (inhalable vancomycin hydrochloride powder), is a patented inhaled dry powder form of vancomycin delivered via a capsule-based device for ease of self-administration. AeroVanc is being developed for the treatment of MRSA lung infections in patients with cystic fibrosis and other high-risk patient populations in critical care settings. While intravenously administered vancomycin is the preferred antibiotic for MRSA-associated bronchopneumonia, its poor penetration into the lungs and systemic toxicity limit its use in chronic settings. By delivering vancomycin directly to the site of lung infection, AeroVanc aims to enhance clinical efficacy and reduce adverse effects associated with systemic drug exposure. AeroVanc was recently granted Orphan Drug Designation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
