Basic Information
Wuhan Neurophth Biotechnology Limited Company is China's first ophthalmic gene therapy drug research and development company, located in Wuhan Optics Valley Biolake, a national-level biotechnology industrial park. The company is committed to the research of gene therapy for hereditary eye diseases and drug development. Neurophth initially chose Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON) as its breakthrough target. Since 2008, it has conducted extensive fundamental research, and in 2011 completed the world’s first clinical study on gene therapy for LHON patients. Among the nine LHON patients involved in this clinical study, long-term observations over seven years have shown no abnormalities in retinal appearance or morphology post-injection. One patient’s vision improved from 0.08 to 0.8, with no complications observed, demonstrating good safety and significant efficacy, surpassing international peers. This research was recognized as one of the "Top Ten Advances in Gene Therapy Worldwide in 2016," one of the "Top Ten Ophthalmology News Stories in China in 2016," and one of the "Top Ten Research Highlights in Retinal Diseases in 2017." In 2017, a second clinical trial commenced, and so far, 141 cases of gene therapy clinical trials have been completed—the largest sample size globally. Follow-up examinations after one month showed an overall effective rate of over 60% in vision improvement, with no complications reported among any of the patients.Recently, seven Argentine patients arrived in China on May 9, 2018, received gene therapy on May 12, and were examined on May 13: all were confirmed safe. Four patients showed significant vision improvement, while one patient experienced vision enhancement. The entire process was introduced on the official website of Argentina’s Ministry of Health. Our company’s proprietary AAV-ND4 gene therapy technology is globally leading and has obtained patents. The company has mature technology, an AAV production and R&D team, and is expanding its R&D team to accelerate the development process. After the success of the first-generation drug, we will expand indications and develop second, third, and fourth-generation gene therapies. At the same time, we are dedicated to researching gene therapies for other hereditary eye diseases such as Retinitis Pigmentosa and Congenital Amaurosis, hoping to bring light and alleviate suffering for patients with hereditary eye diseases. The company plans to enter the U.S., European, and other international ophthalmology markets within three to five years, striving to become an innovative R&D company with international competitiveness in the field of gene therapy for hereditary eye diseases.
