Basic Information

MinervaX is developing a novel vaccine candidate targeting Group B Streptococcus (GBS). GBS is the leading cause of bacterial infections that threaten the lives of newborns, affecting approximately 8,000 infants annually in Europe and the United States. Intrauterine GBS infections can result in preterm birth or stillbirth, as well as neonatal pneumonia, sepsis, and meningitis, causing significant morbidity, mortality, or lifelong disability. The U.S. National Institutes of Health has identified the prevention of GBS in newborns as a primary vaccine target; however, to date, no approved or universally accepted vaccine exists. If widely administered to pregnant women, an effective broad-spectrum vaccine against relevant GBS strains is expected to have a substantial impact both medically and pharmacoeconomically.
