Organ Chip Technology Developer

Basic Information

Emulate, Inc. is a startup commercializing "Organs-on-Chips" technology, a cell-based technology that reconstructs organ-level functions to simulate organs in both healthy and diseased states. This technology can be applied in drug research, product development, and testing how different drugs, chemicals, and foods impact human health. Emulate has also partnered with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on a precision medicine initiative that uses organ chip technology in clinical settings. The initiative aims to provide clinicians with better data on how individual patients respond to treatments. Emulate has also signed a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to advance and validate its human emulation system for regulatory evaluation of product testing. Emulate's Organs-on-Chips technology has been used to reconstruct the functions of various organs, including the liver, intestine, brain, kidney, and lung. The company’s organ chips are about the size of an AA battery, featuring two fluidic channels that generate the flow of blood and other liquids. Made from flexible polymers, these chips can stretch to mimic movements similar to breathing or peristalsis. Emulate has developed a Human Emulation System that combines its organ chips with hardware and software applications. This system is designed to reduce some of the complexities involved in using organ chip technology and is built around the organ chip to recreate the microenvironment of organs found in vivo. An instrument called the Zoë Culture Module provides pressure-driven flow and mimics perfusion pressure and shear forces like those in the human body.
