Beam Therapeutics is the first company to utilize CRISPR base editing technology to develop novel therapies, leveraging gene editing technology to create precise genetic treatments. Beam will focus on four key areas of development: Gene Correction: fixing disease-causing mutations, introducing clinically beneficial genetic variations, or suppressing harmful gene variations; Gene Regulation: editing regulatory elements of genes; Gene Silencing: introducing stop codons to halt gene translation; and Gene Recoding: altering amino acid sequences of proteins by editing codons. Beam Therapeutics was co-founded by three "legendary figures" in the CRISPR field: Professor Feng Zhang of MIT, Professor David Liu of Harvard University, and J. Keith Joung. It is also the first innovative company to use base editing technology to develop precise genetic medicines.Beam's core technology stems from breakthroughs made by Professor Feng Zhang and Professor David Liu, enabling precise editing of individual bases on DNA or RNA. This technology has two key components: one is the CRISPR enzyme capable of specifically targeting any site in the genome, which can be directed at DNA or RNA by using different enzymes. The second key component is a class of enzymes that modify bases. Unlike traditional CRISPR gene editing technology, these enzymes primarily involve chemical modifications of bases without cutting the DNA or RNA, theoretically offering higher safety.
