Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD), known as Merck & Co., Inc. in the United States and Canada, is an American pharmaceutical company and one of the largest pharmaceutical enterprises in the world. Headquartered in Kenilworth, New Jersey, U.S., Merck was established as a subsidiary of Germany's Merck Group (founded in 1668) in 1891. During World War I, Merck was acquired by the U.S. government and later became an independent American company. In 2009, Merck merged with Schering-Plough. By market value and revenue, Merck ranks as the seventh-largest pharmaceutical company globally.
