Basic Information

Santersus AG is a clinical-stage, UK-Swiss private therapeutic blood purification company. In clinical trials, Santersus’ flagship medical device, NucleoCapture, has demonstrated the ability to remove neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) from patient blood. NETs are decondensed DNA fibers decorated with cytotoxic proteins released by activated neutrophils. NETs have been identified as one of the key drivers of sepsis, cancer, acute organ failure, autoimmune disease flare-ups, and neurodegeneration, including Alzheimer’s disease. NucleoCapture has been designated as a Breakthrough Device by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The NucleoCapture blood purification technology is based on highly biocompatible porous polymer beads combined with proprietary human recombinant histone H1.3 protein. Histone H1.3 is naturally produced and serves as the ultimate protein for human DNA binding and compaction, with a DNA binding constant in the single-digit nanomolar range. Thus, in clinical trials, Santersus has demonstrated that passing NET-contaminated blood through the NucleoCapture device once can remove over 95% of NETs. NucleoCapture, developed by Santersus, can be used to treat sepsis, primary graft dysfunction after lung transplantation, extended standard donor organ repair in liver and lung transplantation, and Alzheimer’s disease.
