STAAR designs, develops, manufactures, and sells implantable ophthalmic lenses and accompanying delivery systems. These lenses are designed to provide patients with visual freedom, reducing or eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses. STAAR® developed the first foldable intraocular lens (IOL) for cataract surgery, which was patented and licensed. The foldable IOL, made from flexible materials, allows surgeons for the first time to replace the natural lens of cataract patients through minimally invasive surgery. Foldable IOLs have become the standard for cataract surgery worldwide. In 1991, STAAR introduced the first silicone IOL.
