Motif Neurotech is a company that develops minimally invasive bioelectronic implants for monitoring and treating severe mental illnesses. The company's flagship product is a miniature implant designed to treat treatment-resistant depression (TRD) by increasing activity in the prefrontal cortex. Over 20 years of research has shown that stimulating the prefrontal cortex can effectively treat TRD without the side effects associated with antidepressant medications. However, existing brain stimulation therapies, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), can be expensive and challenging for patients, requiring daily treatments over six consecutive weeks and potentially needing repeated sessions. Studies on humans and large animals have demonstrated that Motif’s prototype can stimulate target brain regions similar to TMS. The company is preparing to begin clinical trials for their first chronic implant in 2025.
