Basic Information
Eyedetec is a U.S.-based medical device company that focuses on treating dry eye and meibomian gland dysfunction. According to the news release by Zhejiang Theravision Ophthalmology, ELM uniquely integrates multiple mechanisms into a single device, allowing users to comfortably and safely wear it over closed eyelids. Specifically, it transfers heat to the eyelids to reduce the viscosity of the lipids (meibum) within the meibomian glands. Next, ELM employs a novel form of resonant frequency stimulation, vibrating within a specific frequency range to induce liquefaction and flow of the meibomian gland lipids, ultimately achieving shear thinning. Finally, it activates the tear functional unit through neuromodulation to induce the excretion of meibum from the meibomian glands. Clinical studies have demonstrated the efficacy of this device, while an additional human factors study has also shown that ELM is intuitive and easy for patients to learn and use.
