Gene Therapy Developer

Basic Information

Visgenx, Inc. is a biotechnology company focused on developing gene therapies for degenerative retinal diseases. Visgenx's initial product is VGX-0111, a gene therapy candidate currently in development for the treatment of dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Nearly 200 million people worldwide suffer from dry AMD; it is a leading cause of blindness. VGX-0111 is based on the ELOVL2 gene, which is essential for the biosynthesis of lipids necessary for retinal cell function and survival. The expression of ELOVL2 declines with age, potentially contributing to the pathology of dry AMD. VGX-0111 aims to restore normal ELOVL2 expression levels, thereby slowing or halting vision loss caused by dry AMD.
