Squarex Pharmaceutical is a clinical-stage pharmaceutical company developing topical formulations of the immunomodulator dibutyl squarate for the prevention of recurrent herpes labialis (cold sores) and other infections caused by Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1) or Herpes Simplex Virus 2 (HSV-2). In the United States, more than 9 million people suffer from 6 or more outbreaks of cold sores each year, with no existing drugs available to prevent outbreaks. Squarex Pharmaceutical's drug SQX770 is unique. Clinical trials have shown that in populations experiencing frequent outbreaks within 3 months, a single topical application on the arm rather than the lips or face can prevent outbreaks of herpes labialis (oral herpes). SQX770 has completed Phase 1 and Phase 2 placebo-controlled clinical trials.
