Lutonix

Lutonix is the first drug-coated balloon featuring a larger diameter 7 mm (40-60 mm) balloon. The Lutonix formulation is designed to achieve an optimal balance of safety and efficacy, with a targeted low dose and appropriate excipients that enable effective transfer of the drug to the vessel wall while minimizing downstream effects. Lutonix closely resembles standard angioplasty balloons but includes paclitaxel and a proprietary carrier that facilitates drug transfer to the arterial wall during inflation. This highly efficient formulation allows the Lutonix DCB to deliver therapeutic doses to the arterial wall while maintaining the lowest possible dose of paclitaxel on the balloon. A lower balloon drug load minimizes systemic drug exposure and aims to maximize safety.
