Lowell Therapeutics is a pharmaceutical company that develops products for critically ill patients. The company has developed an anticoagulant for use in ICU patients with renal failure who require a machine known as continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), or 24/7 dialysis. This machine involves circulating blood outside the patient’s body through a filter. Eventually, the blood will clot in the filter unless anticoagulation is performed. When the filter becomes clogged, doctors and nurses must stop the machine to replace it—discarding the clotted blood and increasing blood loss and transfusion requirements in the process.
