Basic Information
AELIS FARMA is a clinical-stage biotechnology company founded in 2014 as a spin-off from the Magendie Neurocenter in Bordeaux (a leading neuroscience institute of INSERM (French National Institute of Health and Medical Research) and the University of Bordeaux). AELIS FARMA's mission is to develop a new class of pharmacological drugs, signal-specific inhibitors of the CB1 receptor (CB1-SSI), which were discovered by the research team led by Dr. Pier Vincenzo Piazza, who is the CEO of the company and made this discovery during his tenure as director of the Magendie Institute. For this achievement, Dr. Piazza was awarded the INSERM Grand Prize and the French Academy of Sciences' Grand Prize in Neurology, one of France’s most prestigious scientific awards. CB1-SSIs have potential applications in the treatment of numerous diseases. The company is currently developing two first-in-class drug candidates: AEF0117 and AEF0217. AEF0117 targets cannabis-related disorders (CUD and psychosis) and has completed a Phase IIa trial in subjects with cannabis use disorder conducted at Columbia University (New York, USA), showing positive efficacy signals; it will now advance into Phase II clinical trials. AEF0217 is a drug for treating cognitive impairment and will enter Phase I clinical trials in the second half of 2021, where it will be tested for the first time as a therapy for cognitive deficits in Down syndrome. AELIS FARMA also owns a CB1-targeting platform that has already generated new results with differentiated pharmacological profiles.
