Apnimed is a clinical-stage company located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, dedicated to discovering new therapies for sleep apnea and related disorders.Apnimed is built on a simple idea: patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) need a safe and effective medication to address the underlying biological issues of the condition. OSA is a serious disorder where the upper airway partially or completely closes during sleep. Temporary cessation of breathing can significantly reduce oxygen levels in the blood, partially wake the patient throughout the night, and exert mechanical and chemical stress on the entire body. Immediate consequences include excessive daytime sleepiness, fatigue, poor concentration, depression, irritability, and sexual dysfunction. Long-term consequences can be life-threatening, including difficult-to-treat hypertension, atrial fibrillation, heart failure, and stroke. OSA is largely a neurological disorder, and our lead therapy aims to target the key neurobiological mechanisms causing airway obstruction through a simple oral medication. Pioneering research conducted at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston has shown that our development candidate has the potential to become the first disease-modifying oral treatment for OSA, marking a significant shift in how we treat this debilitating condition.
