Basic Information
X-COR Therapeutics is a Boston-based medical device company that has created the first commercially available CO₂ removal device, offering a cheaper, safer, and more accessible treatment for acute respiratory failure using ultra-low blood flow rates. X-COR won the 2019 Harvard Business School New Venture Competition and the 2018 Harvard President’s Innovation Challenge with its device, a novel consumable hybrid cartridge that removes CO₂ from patient blood through a less invasive process compared to high-flow alternatives.X-COR was part of the 2018 MedTech Innovator and MassChallenge cohorts. The core technology of X-COR is a patent-pending medical device that enables physicians to remove excess CO₂ from patients with symptomatic lung failure, supported by a machine-learning-based control algorithm. The system is compatible with existing medical device infrastructure for ease of use, widespread adoption, and rapid deployment. Unlike other technologies treating lung failure, X-COR uses a hybrid approach, allowing patient blood to be drawn through small catheters at flow rates of less than 300 milliliters per minute, which caregivers can place following established protocols. Compared to existing extracorporeal devices that typically require >1 liter per minute flow rates and highly specialized physician intervention, this therapy is more cost-effective, safer, and easier to access.
