Basic Information
Israeli medical device startup Vessi Medical has introduced a new approach to treating non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). Vessi employs surface cryotherapy, a treatment that uses extreme cold to freeze and destroy abnormal tissue. NMIBC is classified as a surface cancer on the inner lining of the bladder, affecting 2 million people globally, with 300,000 new cases reported annually. Transurethral resection of bladder tumors (TURBT) is the leading first-line treatment. However, this invasive surgical procedure, which requires expensive inpatient care under general anesthesia, is often insufficient. In up to 80% of cases, the cancer recurs, leading to increased complications as patients undergo multiple repeat surgeries, further diminishing their quality of life.
