Altis Biosystems is a biotechnology company dedicated to developing research tools for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. The company has developed a patent-pending stem cell technology that reproduces the human intestinal epithelium for use in compound screening and microbiome research. Their organ-on-a-chip product generates a layer of human or animal intestinal stem and differentiated cells, whether from the small intestine or the large intestine. These cells can be used for disease modeling, precision medicine, microbiome research, and compound screening. Altis Biosystems is able to offer their solutions in two formats: 2D monolayer and 3D intestinal cell models. The 2D monolayer format produces a continuous layer of differentiated cells on a flat surface, while the 3D intestinal cell model forms stem and differentiated cells into the contour of the large intestine's inner wall, mimicking the structure and polarization of the crypts.
