Basic Information
Atea is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company dedicated to addressing unmet medical needs through novel antiviral therapies. Atea primarily focuses on developing next-generation biologics for the treatment of hepatitis C and other single-stranded RNA viral infections. Leveraging deep expertise in drug chemistry and a purine nucleotide prodrug platform, the Atea team advances the optimization and development of new candidate drugs targeting viruses such as SARS-CoV-2. Atea’s antiviral compound library includes over 1,000 proprietary prodrugs of nucleoside and nucleotide analogs, offering potent candidates specifically targeting viral RNA polymerases.Currently, Atea is utilizing its purine nucleotide prodrug platform to develop AT-527—an orally administered direct-acting antiviral therapy for treating patients with COVID-19. Viral RNA polymerase is a key component in the replication machinery of RNA viruses, such as positive-sense single-stranded human flaviviruses and human coronaviruses. AT-527 inhibits viral replication by interfering with viral RNA polymerase. In patients with HCV infection, AT-527 has demonstrated clinical safety/tolerability, effective antiviral efficacy, and favorable human pharmacokinetics (PK) profile. It also exhibits robust in vitro activity against human coronaviruses and is currently being evaluated for the treatment of patients with COVID-19.
