54gene is a medical startup that unlocks the genomes of Africans to power genetic research and development, which may lead to new discoveries benefiting everyone.Founded by Dr. Abasi Ene-Obong in 2019, 54gene aims to address a significant gap in the global genomics market: nearly 90% of genetic material used for drug research comes from people of European descent, while only 2% comes from Africans, despite the fact that Africans and people of African ancestry possess more genetic diversity than all other populations in the world combined. As a result, the lack of diverse data in pharmaceutical research and development could be key to medical breakthroughs and new healthcare solutions.
