Basic Information

Modern Plastics began operations in June 1945 in Bridgeport, Connecticut (even before the term "plastics" gained fame), when Joseph C. Carboni founded "Modern Glass Company," a company focused on automotive glass windows.By the mid-1950s, "Modern Plastics and Glass Company" took advantage of the exciting new thermosetting materials and began using phenolic resins, which were part of their first set of plastic materials. In 1961, Modern Plastics continued its pioneering spirit by becoming one of the "first" distributors of Rohm & Haas' new Plexiglas® acrylic sheeting, an inspiring but relatively unknown material at the time. This decision would forever change the company.Thirty years after Modern Plastics opened for business, plastics accounted for 90% of their operations. Under the leadership of the second-generation president in the 70s and 80s, expansion began with a new facility in Rhode Island, followed by several other locations in Massachusetts.Modern Plastics embraced the future by integrating advanced computers and material barcodes into every aspect of their operations. However, regrettably, they also had to bid farewell to a part of their past and phased out the glass portion of their business in the mid-80s.
