Azafaros, founded in 2018, builds on decades of discoveries by professors Hans Aerts, Hermen Overkleeft, and Stan van Boeckel from Leiden University and the Academic Medical Center. Azafaros is expanding its research scope and is led by experienced rare disease industry experts, committed to developing a range of disease-modifying therapies to provide new treatment options for patients and their families. The company’s lead clinical-stage program is nizubaglustat, an orally administered, brain-penetrant small molecule with a unique dual mode of action, showing potential to treat GM1 and GM2 gangliosidosis, Niemann-Pick type C disease, and other metabolic disorders.
