Basic Information
Phagenesis is developing a device to treat dysphagia, a condition where patients are unable to swallow safely, often associated with stroke or other neurological disorders. The approach leverages the brain’s own ability to relearn functions lost due to brain injury (through "neuroplasticity" or "cortical remapping"). Professor Shaheen Hamdy from the University of Manchester in the UK initially focused on acute care for stroke patients during their hospital recovery and devised a method to deliver electrical signals from the pharynx (throat) directly along nerve cells to the corresponding part of the brain. His work has been published in peer-reviewed top-tier scientific and medical journals, including The Lancet, publications from the Nature group, and Gastroenterology.
