On October 7, 2024, the Karolinska Institute in Sweden announced that the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to two American scientists, Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun. The discovery of microRNA revealed a completely new principle of gene regulation, which is expected to play an important role in the diagnosis and treatment guidance of various diseases such as cancer, providing new research strategies for disease diagnosis and treatment.
According to Kezhikang statistics, from 1998 to present, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved 19 small nucleic acid drugs and 3 mRNA vaccines. Currently under review are the antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) therapy Olezarsen for lipid-lowering and the small interfering RNA (siRNA) therapy Fitusiran for hemophilia treatment. Their Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) dates are set for December 19, 2024, and March 28, 2025, respectively.
In the first half of 2024, 11 nucleic acid therapy startups completed early-stage financing, 12 nucleic acid drugs successfully entered clinical trial stages, and in China, 13 novel Class 1 nucleic acid drugs were approved for clinical trials for the first time. Moderna's mRNA personalized cancer vaccine mRNA-4157, in combination with Keytruda therapy, has advanced to the pivotal Phase III clinical trial.

She has played a key role in the research and market launch of China’s first mRNA COVID-19 vaccine (SYS6006, Duente) and the second-generation mRNA vaccine (SYS6006.32). Dr. Wei has applied for 11 invention patents, published 14 SCI papers, and led one project funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

Each issue selects one theme, covering all aspects and multiple dimensions from the perspectives of project initiation, mechanism of action, CMC, ADME, DMPK, toxicology, clinical development, investment, and project transactions., track and analyze the focal points, pain points, and bottlenecks in new drug development to find effective solutions.
