According to Bloomberg, on January 14, 2025,GE Healthcare announced a seven-year, approximately $1 billion partnership agreement with Sutter Health. Will provide artificial intelligence (AI)-driven medical technology and software upgrades for the nonprofit healthcare system. This is the largest order received by the medical technology company since it was spun off from General Electric Co. two years ago.

GE Healthcare stated that the agreement, named Care Alliance, is expected to generate $1 billion in revenue over the course of the partnership. This is the largest deal reached by a medical technology company since GE Healthcare Technologies, Inc. was spun off from General Electric Co. two years ago.
Long-term Partner of GE Healthcare
Sutter Health is a non-profit healthcare system dedicated to providing comprehensive care throughout California. It currently has a professional team of more than 57,000 employees and clinicians, as well as over 12,000 clinical support staff, serving nearly 3.5 million patients. Sutter Health delivers excellent and affordable care through its hospitals, medical groups, outpatient surgery centers, urgent care clinics, telemedicine, home health, and hospice services.
Sutter Health has had a close partnership with GE Healthcare (and GE before the spin-off) for 20 years. This collaboration is also a further deepening of the long-term cooperation between the two parties.

The Core of This Collaboration is AI
This collaboration aims to broaden access to innovative imaging services, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence, with the goal of creating a more seamless and collaborative care experience for clinicians and patients within the Sutter Health system.Through long-term collaboration, Sutter will enhance the accessibility of basic diagnostic care in California, enabling patients to enjoy advanced technical services within their own communities. This will help reduce appointment waiting times, expedite the delivery of diagnostic imaging scan results, enable early disease diagnosis, improve treatment convenience, and ensure patients receive more consistent and timely care.
The core area of this cooperation is Sutter Health's technology acceleration program. The program will focus on introducing a series of cutting-edge artificial intelligence imaging technologies and digital solutions for patients, covering multiple areas such as PET/CT, SPECT/CT, MRI, CT, X-ray, nuclear medicine, and ultrasound. In addition,GE Healthcare's solutions in interventional therapy, mammography, diagnostic cardiology, maternal and infant care, and anesthesia will also be integrated into Sutter Health’s outpatient care centers to meet the growing demand for care that extends beyond the traditional hospital setting.Specific innovative solutions mentioned include the Omni Legend PET/CT, StarGuide SPECT/CT, Vscan Air™ SL ultrasound with Caption AI™ software, and AIR™ Recon DL MR image reconstruction.
The cooperation agreement also involves GE Healthcare's support for Sutter Health's future development. In addition, GE Healthcare will further support the expansion of Sutter Health's advanced service lines and Centers of Excellence, including areas such as cardiac and vascular care, cancer care, and neuroscience. This includes access to new technologies and digital optimization to expand clinical procedures and services, helping to deliver precise, high-quality healthcare from early screening to diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring. Last year, Sutter Health announced three new facilities, including two outpatient centers in Santa Clara and a new cancer center in California’s Central Valley. As part of its expansion strategy, Sutter Health will open a total of 15 new outpatient centers by 2025.
The agreement also mentioned that by addressing the shortage of clinical doctors across China and utilizing AI to obtain diagnostic scan results more quickly, it would help support Sutter Health's expansion. GE HealthCare plans to assist Sutter in designing a talent development program, which will include community outreach and collaboration with radiology technician schools.
Last year, Sutter Health hired more than 1,000 new clinicians and physicians, and the expansion of the workforce will continue into 2025.
The cooperation has been affirmed by both parties.
Sutter Health President and CEO Warner Thomas spoke highly of the collaboration with GE Healthcare, stating: "This strategic partnership is rooted in our commitment to providing innovative, high-quality care to 3.5 million patients across Northern California and the Central Coast." "We are responding to what we've heard from our physicians and implementing a comprehensive upgrade using the latest technology to enhance our capacity and expand access points. This collaboration ensures that no matter where patients enter the Sutter Health system, they will receive seamless and coordinated care."
Peter Arduini, CEO of GE Healthcare, said,AI and data management will continue to be the company's "focus." "Many AI technologies in our products truly help clinicians get answers faster or make the products more efficient."As the healthcare system continues to consolidate and the company transitions from an imaging company to an enterprise offering a variety of healthcare solutions, he anticipates establishing more strategic partnerships. Since the spin-off, the company has formed over 25 strategic partnerships, including research and product development initiatives with Mayo Clinic and a 10-year partnership with University Hospitals in Ohio.
