GSK Outlines Strategic Transaction Plans and Vaccine Stance at JPM 2025

During the 2025 J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference (JPM25), Dr. Tony Wood, Chief Scientific Officer of GSK, shared the scientific strategy behind the company and future deal plans. Following a series of transactions at the end of 2024, Wood anticipates that the trend of deals in the new year will not slow down, especially partnerships that can expand knowledge of diseases driven by genetic factors. At the 2025 J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference, GSK acquired precision biotechnology company IDRx for $1 billion, including its gastrointestinal cancer candidate drug in preparation for Phase 3. Wood stated that GSK’s interest in rectal, colorectal, and gastrointestinal cancers is increasing, and IDRx possesses all the attributes he and Chief Business Officer Luke Miels look for in commercial deals, including an intriguing clinical profile, potential for accelerated development, and alignment with GSK's strategic interests in gastrointestinal solid tumors.

GSK has heavily invested in large-scale datasets of genetics, which was a priority for former Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Hal Barron before he left GSK for Altos Labs in 2022. Through these deals and data, GSK searches for causal signals in Mendelian genetics—biological inheritance patterns that cause significant diseases early in life. These partnerships help GSK understand the potential impact of specific pathways or pharmacological modalities. For example, the application of GSK-4532990 in alcoholic liver disease (ALD) was acquired through collaboration with Arrowhead. This candidate drug targets the HSD17B13 gene, which is involved in lipid metabolism and primarily expressed in the liver.

Although GSK does not intend to directly enter the highly competitive field of obesity treatment, this does not mean that the company is not involved in obesity-related diseases.
