At the 2025 AF Symposium held in Boston, Medtronic's cardiac rhythm management portfolio took center stage, featuring its Insertable Cardiac Monitor (ICM) and Pulse Field Ablation (PFA) system. The showcase of these technologies not only captured significant attention from professionals but also brought new hope and possibilities to the field of atrial fibrillation (AFib) treatment.
Preliminary Results of DEFINE AFib Trial Presented at Symposium Show Medtronic's Linq Series ICM Can Work with Advanced AI Algorithms to Guide Treatment Decisions for AFib Patients. The study evaluated nearly 1,000 patients, organizing them based on their risk for needing AFib-related healthcare. The results showed that 22% of trial participants in the high-risk category indeed required predicted care in less than five months.
Jonathan P. Piccini, MD, an electrophysiologist at Duke University Hospital and the Duke Clinical Research Institute, noted, "The first-of-its-kind DEFINE AFib study utilized a unique design that engaged patients from the outset." This study not only helps us understand how different durations and patterns of AFib affect the risk of future health events but also combines continuous rhythm monitoring with traditional risk factors, providing crucial information for risk assessment, prioritization, and treatment decisions.
Medtronic's Two PFA Products, the Affera Mapping and Ablation System with Sphere-9 Catheter and the PulseSelect System, Garner Significant Attention at the Symposium. The PulseSelect PFA System was the First to Receive Approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the Treatment of Paroxysmal and Persistent AFib. Close on its Heels, the Affera System with Sphere-9 Catheter was Approved in October 2024.
The conference agenda highlighted how these technologies can assist cardiologists in performing pulmonary vein isolation procedures, the possibility of same-day discharge for PFA patients, and the impact of the Affera system on fluoroscopy use. Additionally, there were five case demonstrations, providing attendees with an up-close look at the potential of PFA.
Rebecca Seidel, President of Medtronic's Cardiac Ablation Solutions business, said, "As global awareness and utilization of our PFA products continue to grow, these new data and cases presented at the AFib symposium will provide physicians with additional valuable insights."
