On January 21, 2025, Medtronic announced,Thierry Piéton has been appointed as Chief Financial Officer (CFO), with the term commencing on March 3.

The New One, Which Is Placed High Hopes OnCFO

Medtronic's former Chief Financial Officer Karen Parkhill left last August after serving in the role for eight years to join HP, and since then Medtronic has been searching for a new financial leader.

Gary Corona, Medtronic's current acting Chief Financial Officer, will assume the role of Senior Vice President of Finance in March and continue to serve on Medtronic's Executive Committee.

Medtronic's newly hired CFO, Thierry Pieton, joined the company from automobile manufacturer Renault Group, where he has been serving as the Chief Financial Officer since 2022.During Pierrot's tenure at Renault, the company achieved unprecedented record-high operating profit margins and free cash flow. He also helped the company successfully complete portfolio management, including acquisitions, divestitures, and capital development. Prior to this, Pierrot held finance-related positions at Nissan Motor and General Electric (including its healthcare business).

As the Chief Financial Officer, his responsibilities include leading Medtronic's global finance organization and key support functions. This includes finance, controllership, tax, internal audit, investor relations, corporate strategy, and business development.

According to reports,Peighton's base salary will be $850,000. He will also participate in an incentive plan, with a target of receiving a bonus equivalent to 110% of his salary by 2025. Additionally, Peighton will receive a cash bonus of $3 million to compensate for the forfeited compensation from his previous position.

Analysts at Truist Securities wrote in a note to investors on Tuesday that the appointment comes as Medtronic has struggled to achieve sustained margin expansion and accelerating profit growth. The analysts hope Piereton can help the company achieve its goal of margin improvement.

Revenue Growth:Global revenue was $7.92 billion, reported growth of 2.8%, organic growth of 5.3%, and adjusted revenue of $8 billion, slightly above the expected $7.89 billion.

Profit Increase: Net profit was $1.042 billion, a year-on-year increase of 32%; diluted earnings per share were $0.80, a year-on-year increase of 36%. Non-GAAP net profit was $1.592 billion, with diluted earnings per share of $1.23, a year-on-year increase of 3%, surpassing the expected earnings per share of $1.20.

Business Performance:Among the four major businesses, the diabetes business achieved double-digit growth in revenue.$6.47 billion, a year-on-year increase of 11.8%, with organic growth of 12.6%;Cardiovascular portfolio revenue reached $3.007 billion, a year-over-year increase of 5.5%, with organic growth of 6.9%;Neuroscience portfolio revenue was $2.317 billion, representing a 4.4% increase year-over-year, with organic growth of 5.3%;Medical Surgical Portfolio revenue was $1.996 billion, with organic growth of 1.0%.

The Second Quarter

Revenue Growth Again:Total revenue was $8.403 billion, a year-on-year increase of 5.3%, or 5.0% on an organic growth basis. Revenue in the U.S. market was $4.304 billion, a year-on-year increase of 3.3%; international market revenue was $4.099 billion, a year-on-year increase of 7.0%.

Profit Improvement: Non-GAAP adjusted earnings per share were $1.26, a year-over-year increase of 1%. Excluding the impact of exchange rate fluctuations, the adjusted earnings per share growth rate reached 8%. GAAP net income reached $1.27 billion, a year-over-year surge of 40%.

Each business segment performed well: Cardiovascular business revenue was $31.02 billion, a year-over-year increase of 5.6%; Neuroscience business revenue reached $24.51 billion, a year-over-year increase of 6.7%; Medical Surgical business revenue was $21.28 billion, a year-over-year increase of 0.7%; Diabetes business revenue was $6.86 billion, a year-over-year increase of 11.0%.

Operational Efficiency Improvement: Adjusted gross margin reached 65.2%, an increase of 40 basis points year-over-year. Adjusted operating profit margin was 24.3%, up 100 basis points year-over-year. Free cash flow year-to-date amounted to $1 billion, growing nearly 30% year-over-year.
