Illumina's Unfortunate Year...

On February 6, 2025, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), founded by Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Meta (Facebook), and his wife Priscilla Chan, announced the launch of“Billion Single Cell Project”, PromoteArtificial Intelligence Models in the Field of BiologyThe rapid development of development.
Once completed, this single-cell dataset will bring critical new data and higher resolution to multiple fields of biology that require comprehensive resources, such as mapping genetic perturbations across diverse cell types and tissues. Crucially, the scale and consistency of data enabled by current and future contributions to the "Billion-Cell Project" will provide a larger and more consistent volume of data than previous efforts, thereby better assisting researchers in training artificial intelligence models and achieving transformative discoveries in fields like precision medicine and functional genomics.
"The CZI 'Billion-Cell Project' demonstrates the power of collaboration, enabling researchers to access an unprecedented amount of single-cell data, which will help us gain a clearer understanding of the fundamental biology underlying human health and disease, while accelerating efforts at the intersection of artificial intelligence and biology," said Jonah Cool, Senior Science Program Officer for Cell Science at CZI. "Biology doesn't just need more data — the field needs faster access to more data and withInteroperable Format"Supporting AI models that solve specific problems, this project represents a unique approach to scaling and standardizing scientific output for use in AI and other fields."
CZI is the only philanthropic organization that funds and builds the world's largest non-profit computing system dedicated to life science research. Data from the "Billion-Cell Project" will be used to leverage CZI’s computing system to train new virtual cell models, providing deeper insights into this vast dataset. As part of its commitment to open science to accelerate research and make science more inclusive, CZI plans to share the outcomes of this project.Open source and free provision, to help global scientists discover new knowledge in human biology.
