On March 6, 2025, AstraZeneca registered a Phase 2b clinical trial for weight loss using the combination of AZD9550 and AZD6234 on the Clinicaltrials.gov website.

The Phase 2b clinical trial plans to enroll 360 obese patients and is expected to be completed by June 2026.

The primary endpoints of this Phase 2b clinical trial are the percentage of weight loss after 36 weeks of treatment and the proportion of patients who lost more than 5% of their body weight.

AZD9550 is a GLP-1/GCG dual agonist, which previously underwent a Phase I clinical trial for MASH.

AZD6234 is a long-acting Amylin analog that was previously tested in a Phase II clinical trial for weight loss as a monotherapy.

AstraZeneca's small molecule GLP-1 receptor agonist introduced from Chengyi Bio has also advanced to Phase 2b clinical trials.

Summary
AstraZeneca has made extensive arrangements for weight loss, with AZD5004 as the cornerstone. AZD6234 is used for adjuvant treatment or as an alternative treatment for patients intolerant to GLP-1. The combination of AZD6234 and AZD9550 integrates three mechanisms of action, showing promise in achieving fat-specific weight loss and organ protection effects.
