Mitral Regurgitation (MR) is a type of heart valve disease in which the mitral valve (located between the left atrium and left ventricle) does not close properly during heart contraction, causing abnormal backflow of blood from the left ventricle to the left atrium.
Mitral regurgitation is a very common disease, with approximately 1.7% of the global population suffering from mitral regurgitation. Moreover, the risk of developing mitral regurgitation increases with age: the risk is 0.5% among patients aged 18 to 44, but rises to 9.3% in people aged 75 and above. If mitral regurgitation is not treated promptly, it can be very dangerous. Untreated mitral regurgitation can lead to reduced cardiac output, increased pulmonary congestion, and heart failure. If severe mitral regurgitation is left untreated, the one-year mortality rate can be as high as 57%.
Despite significant advancements in the treatment of mitral regurgitation over the past two decades, the solutions remain imperfect, whether it be edge-to-edge repair or replacement. Therefore, innovation in the treatment of mitral regurgitation is still needed. Based on a unique understanding of mitral regurgitation, Sutra Medical has developed a novel transcatheter solution for treating mitral regurgitation — the SUTRA HEMI-VALVE.
