March 20, 2025, Medtronic (NYSE: MDT)Announced the latest real-world data on its Smart MDI System, which combines the InPen smart insulin pen and the Simplera continuous glucose monitor (CGM)., aiming to provide more precise and convenient treatment options for patients with diabetes.
Medtronic Shared Data at the 18th International Conference on Advanced Technologies & Treatments for Diabetes (ATTD), Demonstrating Significant Efficacy of the Smart MDI System in Helping Diabetes Patients Achieve Blood Glucose Management Goals. By Reducing the Frequency of Hyperglycemia, the System Enables Patients to Get Closer to the Internationally Recommended Target of Spending 70% of Time in the Target Blood Glucose Range (TIR).

According to a press release provided by Medtronic, despite the widespread use of CGM technology in diabetes management, less than 30% of people with diabetes achieve the HbA1c target of below 7%. When traditional MDI therapy is combined with regular blood glucose monitoring, patients' TIR is only 45%; when MDI is combined with intermittently scanned CGM, the TIR is just 51%, far below the ideal goal of 70%.
Medtronic's intelligent MDI system emerged in this context.Becoming the first system on the market able to recommend and correct missed or inaccurate insulin doses. The system provides personalized dose recommendations and issues alerts to remind patients of necessary dose adjustments by monitoring blood glucose levels in real time.Medtronic Receives FDA Approval for Simplera System in August 2024
To evaluate the real-world effectiveness of the Smart MDI system, Medtronic conducted data analysis on 1,852 self-reported Type 1 diabetes patients in Europe who use the Smart MDI system. The results showed that the average percentage of Time in Range (TIR) for these users was 55.7%. Notably, individuals who used the Smart MDI system as intended and responded to over 75% of missed dose alerts or high blood glucose alarms with bolus corrections achieved an average TIR of 67.2% and 71.5%, respectively. This data strongly demonstrates the practicality and effectiveness of the system’s alert functions in helping users achieve better glycemic outcomes.
Medtronic stated that its smart MDI system greatly simplifies the diabetes management process by providing real-time, personalized insights. Data shows that 52.6% of injections are administered following dose calculator recommendations, reducing guesswork and confusion for patients in dose calculation.
Currently, Medtronic has provided the Smart MDI system in 16 countries across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, and plans to conduct a limited launch in the United States. The company is initially targeting independent customers of CGM and InPen for promotion and intends to proceed with a broader commercial release in the future.
"Ohad Cohen, PhD, Senior Director of Global Medical Affairs for Medtronic Diabetes, stated, 'Calculating insulin doses is indeed a challenging task for people with diabetes who inject insulin multiple times a day. The combination of the Medtronic Smart MDI system and Simplera CGM provides the first snapshot of simplifying this burden for them in real-life situations. These data allow us to gain deeper insights into the behaviors of MDI therapy users, and we believe that through future longitudinal analysis and educational efforts, we will see even more encouraging results.'"
With the promotion and application of intelligent MDI systems, diabetic patients will welcome more convenient and effective solutions in blood glucose management.
