Recently,Novo Nordisk announced plans to invest up to USD 1.09 billion (approximately DKK 6 billion) in expanding its existing manufacturing site in Montes Claros, Brazil. The newly expanded production facility will primarily focus on the company’s core products: the GLP-1 diabetes medication Ozempic and the weight management drug Wegovy.

According to the company's plan, the production base is expected toCompleted construction before 2028, and will createMore than 500 high-tech positionsNovo Nordisk's investment plan in Brazil this time is one of the largest pharmaceutical investments in history. This huge amount of funds will be used to introduce advanced aseptic production processes, expand warehouse capacity, and build new high-quality control laboratories. Such a large-scale expansion marks Novo Nordisk's emphasis on the Brazilian market and its further layout in the Latin American market.

This investment comes as Brazilian pharmaceutical companies, such as Hypera, are preparing to enter the growing GLP-1 market. Hypera recently announced plans to launch its generic version of Ozempic once the drug’s patent expires in Brazil. Novo Nordisk stated it is not concerned about the patent expiration, noting that this is a common occurrence in the industry. The global trade war initiated by Trump will not impact the plant, as the United States is not a destination for Brazilian-made products, and Novo Nordisk is separately expanding its production capacity in the U.S.
