The European Innovation Council (EIC) was established by the European Commission to support the commercialization of high-risk, high-impact technologies within the EU. The fully operational EIC was launched in March 2021 under Horizon Europe and is integrated into the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency. Its objective is to help researchers, startups, and small and medium-sized enterprises bring their innovations to market by providing funding, networking and collaboration opportunities, and business acceleration services.

On April 17, 2025, AMT Medical announced that it had raised funds in its Series B financing round.$25 million (approximately 180 million RMB), to support subsequent R&D, regulatory applications, and other work for its Elana coronary bypass system. The Elana system is designed to replace traditional open-chest bypass surgery and is expected to be compatible with surgical robots, enabling robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery.

New investors Invest-NL and the European Innovation Council (EIC), along with existing investors such as Oost NL, participated in this round of financing. The company is expected to obtain CE certification in 2026 for use in open surgery CABG.

Research and Development Background

  • In traditional coronary artery bypass surgery, surgeons typically use venous vessels (such as the great saphenous vein) as bypass materials. This is because venous vessels are easy to obtain and relatively simple to operate. However, venous vessels have some limitations,For example, poor long-term patency may lead to postoperative vascular restenosis.

  • Moreover, traditional coronary artery bypass surgery usually requires open-chest surgery, which...OverA larger chest incision (usually a median sternotomy) to expose the heart. This surgical method is more invasive and has a longer recovery time.

  • In addition, in traditional coronary artery bypass surgery, for the convenience of surgical operation,CommonIt is necessary to stop the heart from beating and use a cardiopulmonary bypass machine (heart-lung machine) to maintain blood circulation. However, cardiopulmonary bypass may bring some complications, such as stroke, bleeding, and renal insufficiency.

Product Features

  • Arterial Bypass:The Elana system allows surgeons to use arterial vessels (such as the internal thoracic artery) for bypass grafting. Arterial vessels have more advantages than venous vessels because they offer better hemodynamic performance, higher long-term patency, and can more effectively improve coronary blood flow.

  • Small Incision Surgery:The Elana system employs minimally invasive surgical techniques, allowing surgeons to access the thoracic cavity through small incisions.Reduced surgical trauma, decreased postoperative pain, and shortened hospital stays and recovery time.

  • Beating-heart Surgery:The Elana system allows surgeons to perform operations without stopping the heart. The procedure eliminates the risk of stroke and other complications associated with the use of a heart-lung machine, as it does not require cardiopulmonary bypass. Off-pump surgery is more physiologically compatible and reduces stress responses on the patient’s body.

  • Sutureless Anastomosis Technology:The Elana system uses sutureless anastomosis technology, employing proprietary clips and excimer laser to connect blood vessels without manual suturing. This not only enhances the precision and repeatability of the surgery but also reduces operation time and the risk of complications.

  • Standard Operating Procedures:No matter which surgeon uses the system, it can complete the vascular connection in the same way, ensuring the consistency of surgical quality, making the system easier to be widely promoted and applied.

# Research Progress

Previously, the company reported positive results from its first milestone, the First-in-Human (FIH) CE Mark trial.

First-in-Human (FIH) SAFE-CAB Trial Phase I Demonstrates Encouraging Results Involving 10 Subjects. In the first phase of SAFE-CAB, Elana®The cardiac bypass system has been proven to be safe and feasible in humans, with no major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) reported among all trial participants at 30 days post-operation.
AMT Medical Also obtained fromSignificant support from the European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency Innovation Credit has resulted in millions of euros.Yuan's appropriation.
AMT Medical Another trial has now been prepared and is being expanded to 75 subjects, with the ultimate goal of obtaining commercial use approval in Europe. In addition, the company is now in final discussions with the U.S. FDA to initiate an early feasibility study for the system in the United States. Elana®Cerebral vascular bypass surgery has saved the lives of up to a thousand patients in Europe, the United States, and Canada.
