To highlight the innovation and vitality of Zhangjiang's life science industry, the "Zhangjiang Pharm Valley" WeChat Official Account was launched.【Pharmaceutical Valley Rising Star】 Column, featuring an in-depth dialogue with emerging companies from Zhangjiang Pharm Valley to decode innovation. In this issue, we will be speaking withShanghai Chemical.AI Information Technology Co., Ltd.(Hereinafter referred to as "Chemical AI") CEO Dr. Ning Xia, to learn how this technology company, which focuses on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of chemistry, explores the integration boundaries of AI and chemistry.

The 2018 Government Work Report proposed to strengthen the research and application of a new generation of artificial intelligence, develop intelligent industries, and expand intelligent living. This is the second time that artificial intelligence has been included in the Government Work Report, following its first mention in 2017.

In the wave of AI empowering various industries, Xia Ning, a chemistry Ph.D., keenly recognized the application potential and prospects of AI technology in chemical synthesis R&D. In the same year, he took the firm step of entrepreneurship and founded Chemical AI.Chemical AI, hoping to inject a "smart" force into chemical synthesis R&D, making chemical synthesis faster and less costly.

Adhering to the Belief of Long-termism, Enabling the Value of Scientific Research to "Truly Land"

We often encounter experts with a strong background in either chemistry or AI algorithms, but it is extremely rare to find someone proficient in both fields. This requires an individual to have deep exploration and unique insights in two vastly different knowledge systems. Xia Ning has long been involved in both areas, yet he remains humble, stating:"I still have a long way to go."

Chemical AI CEO Ning Xia

In 2003, after graduating from Tongji University, Xia Ning went to France to further his studies at the National Higher School of Chemistry in Montpellier. He was the first international student from China at this prestigious institution.At the same time, a strong interest in programming also drives him to continuously explore how computers can enhance the efficiency of chemical R&D.

During his Ph.D. studies in chemistry at the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), Xia Ning discovered the cross-disciplinary potential between programming and chemistry: "Molecules that chemists spend months designing could potentially be optimized by a computer in just minutes." After completing his doctorate, he resolutely embarked on an entrepreneurial journey. From explorations abroad to practical applications in China, from building a B2B e-commerce platform for chemicals to the deep cultivation of Chemical AI, Xia Ning has always held onto a simple yet grand vision:Leading Chemistry from Traditional Experience-Driven Models into an Intelligent and Automated Future

Chemical AI was founded at the end of 2018, but the company's related technical accumulation dates back much earlier. "If research only stays at the theoretical level and cannot be transformed into practical value, its appeal to me will be greatly reduced," said Xia Ning. Chemical AI is the "stage" for his third venture.This time, he chose to introduce AI into the key pharmaceutical环节 of chemical synthesis — a field known as the "rate-limiting step."Because he is well aware of the complexity and intricacy of chemical synthesis, and has witnessed countless researchers' relentless exploration and repeated experiments in the laboratory.

The road to entrepreneurship is fraught with thorns. Xia Ning frankly admitted that the most difficult moment was when the product had initially taken shape but failed to fully meet user needs—a phase he vividly referred to as the "valley of death." During this period, many peers either chose to give up or turned to other paths, but Chemical AI remained steadfast. "Many companies might have exited the stage with regret even before their products matured, which is precisely the harshest test on the entrepreneurial journey," Xia Ning believed.It is this persistence that has enabled Chemical AI to gradually build up an irreplicable technological "moat."

It can be seen that, adhering to the belief of long-termism, Chemical AI, driven by the robust power of chemical big data, has independently developed a series of algorithm models. By integrating AI technology with robotics and utilizing deep learning algorithms, it has injected new momentum into the digitization, intelligence, and automation of chemical synthesis. This has comprehensively enhanced the efficiency of chemical synthesis and provided numerous cutting-edge product services and innovative solutions for various fields such as biomedicine, chemical industry, and new materials.

However, this is merely thirty percent of the grand blueprint in Ning Xia's heart."The remaining 70% lies in achieving the true commercialization, replicability, and scalability of the technology."We need to continuously engage in dialogue with the market, deepen our research and development, and meticulously refine our products." Xia Ning emphasized. "No matter how the outside world changes, we will remain steadfast on this path and move forward with determination."

Building an "AI Chemist," Launching a Practice of AI-Empowered Molecular Synthesis

For a long time, the research and development of chemically synthesized drugs has been trapped in "manual labor." It usually takes a mature chemist more than two hours to design a synthetic route. Chemical AI focuses on AI-assisted chemical synthesis route design. Its independently developed algorithm decomposes based on data learning and chemical knowledge, solving the problem.InterpretabilityAndAmount of Chemical Reaction DataTwo major challenges. Among them, the enterprises launchedChina-produced Computer-aided Synthesis Planning Platform —— ChemAIRSIt takes only a few seconds to minutes to find synthetic routes, recommending the most suitable synthetic scheme for researchers—earning it the title of "AI Chemist."

Case of Automation Solution: Chemical AI Automation Laboratory

In December last year, ChemAIRS 3.0 was newly launched. Based on chemical big data mining and deep learning algorithms, it only requires the input of the target molecule to design multiple synthetic routes for the molecule within minutes, providing chemists with diverse and feasible synthetic ideas.

In addition, the database contains over 60 million reaction data entries and hasIncluding retrosynthesis, condition search, impurity prediction, process mode, forward synthesis, and synthesizability evaluation.Six modules, allowing users to request a quote for molecules on the target route with one click, especially in process mode, helping users better obtain the price of kilogram-scale raw materials.

Laboratory Artificial Intelligence Integrated Solution

In order to free more chemists from manual labor, Chemical AI has also combined its self-developed algorithms with automated experimental equipment, providing professional and efficient chemical synthesis services to various industries through ChemAILAB. Xia Ning further elaborated on the several advantages of the Al+ automated synthesis laboratory:

● First, the AI-assisted route design platform can significantly reduce the time required for synthetic personnel to design routes and optimize conditions;

● Second, the intelligent management and operation platform can provide digital inheritance of experience, enhancing corporate competitiveness;

● Thirdly, the automated synthesis platform can operate 24/7, significantly increasing the number of reactions and shortening project timelines;

● Fourthly, the standardized data generated by automated synthesis can be continuously accumulated and learned by algorithms, bringing higher efficiency to research and development while ensuring data confidentiality.

"The biggest advantage of AI automated laboratories is the low-cost replicability."Xia Ning pointed out, "It takes many years to train a Ph.D. to engage in research and development, but if AI possesses the R&D capability at the Ph.D. level, it can be infinitely replicated at a very low marginal cost." Notably,ChemAILABNot operating in isolation, but deeply integrated with Chemical AI's self-developed laboratory digital management system, ChemAIOS. This system is specifically designed to support AI automation processes, enabling robots to manage projects and record data for autonomous learning.

"As long as full-process automation is achieved, the management of the laboratory will become simple and safe, because compared to humans, the error rate of machines is very low,"补充道.

At present, the retrosynthesis algorithm of Chemical AI has reached the level of a synthetic expert with ten years of experience, and behind this breakthrough is more than a decade of technological iteration. "We basically have several major algorithm improvements each year, continuously optimizing and testing iterations." Xia Ning particularly emphasized that while the breakthrough from "0" to "1" is important, the application落地 from "1" to "100" is even more difficult."The workload will be ten times, or even a hundred times, that of the previous '0' to '1' stage."

Rooted in Zhangjiang, Looking Globally: Together Drawing the Future Blueprint of Chemical AI

Chemical AI adopts"Shanghai-Wuhan" Dual Headquarters Model, The division of labor between the two locations is clear: Wuhan focuses more on product development and the establishment of a chemical intelligent laboratory, while the Shanghai office mainly handles AI research and business expansion. This layout leverages Wuhan's advantages in R&D and cost, as well as Shanghai's talent pool and international perspective.

In Xia Ning's view, Zhangjiang is an important biopharmaceutical hub in China, where more than 2,300 biopharmaceutical innovation entities and over 90,000 biopharmaceutical professionals have gathered on this fertile ground for innovative drugs.Sci-Tech Innovation TalentAndMarket Customers"This is the important reason why Chemical AI has always been rooted in Zhangjiang. This kind of industrial 'agglomeration effect' not only reduces the operating costs of enterprises but also creates abundant cooperation opportunities."

As recently as last August, Chemical AI relocated to the Zhangjiang Science City Moli Community, further integrating into Zhangjiang's life sciences innovation industry ecosystem. "The work environment here has a great atmosphere, and the community often provides relevant information and activities on large-model AI. We also hope to establish more new cooperative relationships with upstream and downstream partners here," admitted Xia Ning.

With the rapid development of frontier technologies such as large models, AI is gradually infiltrating and is expected to reshape various industries, including biopharmaceutical R&D. Xia Ning believes,The increased industry acceptance has brought unprecedented new opportunities for Chemical AI."We will continue to increase R&D investment, build professional models in vertical fields, and integrate embodied intelligence technology to jointly create the next generation of automated synthesis laboratories."

As the slogan of Chemical AI ——"Shaping the Future of Chemistry", evolving from a personal dream to a corporate mission, from initial explorations in the lab to a complete industrial revolution. Under the leadership of Ning Xia, Chemical AI is gradually turning the vision of "reshaping the future of chemistry with AI" into reality. In this journey filled with opportunities and challenges, perseverance and innovation will be their strongest support, jointly drawing a new chapter for the future of chemical synthesis.
